Safe distribution of medication is just as important as safe disposal of medication. Many households accumulate unused or expired medication over the years, and struggle to dispose of it properly. These medications, known as “household medication waste”, get thrown into the regular bin or flushed down the toilet. These methods of disposal can contaminate water systems and harm aquatic ecosystems; pharmaceutical compounds are documented in rivers and groundwater worldwide, with demonstrated effects on aquatic life (direct harm to human health at these concentrations has not been established but is monitored). In Israel, there is currently no dedicated legislation covering household medication disposal — the Ministry of Health has issued procedural guidance for pharmacies and permitted certain collection schemes, but a comprehensive framework is not yet in place and few Israeli’s properly dispose of medication. However, it is extremely important to discard these medications properly to ensure the safety of the environment and public health.

Here are some options for medication disposal in Tel Aviv:
Pharmacy Take-Back Programs:
Many pharmacies in Tel Aviv have take-back programs where you can return unused or expired medications for proper disposal. The Ministry of Health has advised pharmacies that even those not part of the national health fund can drop their medication at pharmacies. Some pharmacies have also added drop boxes for people to come in and return their unused medication. Check with your local pharmacy to see if they participate in such a program.
Medication Recycling Program:
Haverim L’Refuah (Friends for Health) is an organisation founded in 2003 to help people who cannot afford medication in Israel. One of their programs includes a Medication Donation Scheme where people can donate unused medication to be sent to the program’s pharmacy. This organisation enables redistribution of medication to those who need it under a government-recognised scheme; donated medicines should be unused, unexpired and in original sealed packaging — previously opened or temperature-sensitive medicines should not be donated. There are over 600 collection points within Israel to drop off the medication. If you find yourself with leftover medication, this organisation can help safely repurpose the medication without causing harm to people or the environment. While it may seem like the most convenient option, it is important not to flush medications down the toilet or throw them in the regular trash, as it can lead to contamination of water sources or pose risks to humans and wildlife. If leaving behind medication while moving apartments or returning home after a visit to Israel, always follow proper disposal methods to protect the environment and public health.
