Professor Carly (Caroline) Fertleman

Dr Carly has been a paediatrician for over 30 years and is a consultant in general paediatrics at The Whittington Hospital in North London, UK, where she has worked for the last 19 years. Key to her practise is to use humour to relax patients and parents and above all to keep the child, however old, at the centre of her focus and attention. Over the decades, there is little that she has not seen in terms of paediatric illness. She works 40% of her time in the UK National Health Service where she returns for a short time in February and November and for two months in the Summer as she is considered a wise and valuable member of the team but wanted to live in Israel. She made Aliyah in September 2023 and holds an Israeli medical licence. Dr Carly studied at both Cambridge University and the Royal London Hospital to gain her medical degree and then undertook specialist paediatric training in most of the North London hospitals including University College London and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. For many years her specialist interest was in medical education, and in 2018 she became a full Professor of Paediatric Education at Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, University College London.   She has written seven parenting books including “Your baby week by week”. In addition she has written three textbooks and authored over 90 peer-reviewed scientific articles with many citations. She is the world expert on a rare disorder (Paroxysmal Extreme Pain Disorder). She has made educational videos for some very well known companies. She aims to empower parents predominantly of babies regarding issues particularly around safety and general newborn issues. She is the mother to three adult children and came on Aliyah to Jaffa with her dog Talulah. She has since been joined by two hilarious cats, Bobbin and Moses. Her passions are all things crafty, especially knitting. Since arriving in Israel, she has learnt to paddle board and surf and is the bespoke mender of all clothing items for her friends. She loves to read, cycle and walk. Coffee is probably her worst addiction.   She also likes to collect letters after her name! Currently these are…MD, FRCPCH, MSc, MB BChir, BA (Hons) Cantab, SFHEA, FAcadMEd. Translation : undergraduate and graduate degrees, specialist paediatric qualification, a masters degree, an MD (PhD equivalent), and two educational awards – Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators.
